Cheers to six years of this blog. On March 1, 2012, I bought the yo-toi.com domain. I don’t remember what I had in mind at the time, other than that I wanted to have a website documenting things that I like. In hindsight, it feels like I needed a vehicle to create or perhaps hone my personal aesthetic.
I ran yo-toi.com on Tumblr for a few years and then switched to WordPress hosting in 2015. Ever since then, this blog has been a centralized place for me to express my creativity. I’ve become a better writer, marketer, and businesswoman. I even learned how to do my own box braids. Among the many things I’ve learned, one of greatest lessons of blogging is the importance of consistency. When I am consistently writing and publishing, I get more out of this blog personally and professionally. Even with the small-ish audience I have, I’ve been lucky enough to participate in brand collaborations related to things I’m passionate about, and meet dope people. I’ve even received work opportunities from this blog. No matter what I’ve been through over the years, it’s one of the most consistent things in my life. It’s been with me through like four or five jobs, with the same boyfriend though.
I’ve admittedly been sporadic with posting over the past eight weeks while nursing myself through a cold, then the flu, and work demands. I’m feeling better and ready to resume a consistent publishing schedule. Writing this blog is my therapy, and we the people need inspiration in our everyday lives more than ever. I want to use my digital platforms to empower others as much as I can.
I want to spin this blog into a store or two, publish some books, and live out my black American woman entrepreneurship dreams. Putting it out into the universe! In the meantime, in honor of my blog’s 6th anniversary, I want to share six of my most popular posts of all time, plus my current favorite writing playlist (must love hip-hop). If you follow me on Instagram, you know my steez…
