One of my favorite things about summer is ice cream. And there’s no better way to wrap up a long, hot work week than to treat yo’self with some!
So last Friday, I bought myself a Mexican frozen treat: a single serving paleta. Popsicles made of fresh fruit and flavors, Mexican popsicles are sold at shops that carry Mexican food products (basically every grocery and convenience store in LA/OC/SFV). Paletas come in a variety of flavors, but I was excited to try a Mango Chamoy paleta. Whether it’s fresh chili lime mangos from a street cart, a mango smoothie with chamoy sauce, or chili lime dried mangos, I love spicy mango in all its forms.
I am obsessed with spicy mango.
Back to the mango chamoy paletas – so delicious and refreshing on a hot day. Spicy, cool, savory and only a slightly sweet. Sometimes I’m in the mood for sweet, other times savory. On days when I want a frozen dessert that’s not ice cream or gelato, paletas are a healthier option. If I eat more than one, I don’t feel so bad.
I see myself eating fruit bars more often this summer. During my last grocery shopping trip, I bought Coconut Outshine bars on a whim, I was pretty happy with those too. I still have room in my palette (and my freezer) for creamy frozen desserts – an unopened pint of Caramel Apple Pie gelato awaits in my freezer. But paletas and frozen fruit bars have a special place next to that, and ice cream.
