Everyone living in LA has a strong opinion on which restaurant has the best southern BBQ in Los Angeles. JR’s BBQ in Culver City is one of the places I go to on a repeat basis for Memphis-style barbecue. Disclaimer: I’ve never been to Tennessee, so I can’t compare JR’s to the real thing. What I do know is that the man running the restaurant is from Memphis, and is related to one of the Neely’s of Food Network fame. His barbecue street cred is good with me.
JR’s BBQ is a roadside joint, located on a busy strip of La Cienega in Culver City. The building has been around since the 1950s when it used to be a diner serving crew members working at the nearby studios. JR’s has occupied the building since the late 1990s.
What We Ordered
Top: Pulled pork, brisket, baked beans, potato salad, Arnold Palmer.
Bottom: Three Way: Chicken Sausage, Pork Ribs, Rib Tips, baked beans, potato salad.
Delicious, healthy portions of tender, flavorful meat. The hot BBQ sauce is really hot, the medium-heat sauce is pretty spicy too. The chicken sausage was especially good, as well the potato salad.
Great For:
Lunch, Dinner, emotional eating, drowning feelings in barbecue sauce and sweet tea.
Notes
Enter on Blackwelder Street, there’s a small parking lot in front.
